The Ajaxed Web LandScape

A new Graphing library MXGraph based on javascript, svg and vml is released. Just saw it on Ajaxian today.  This baby can do so much stuff that you would forget that you are in a browser.

It's great because it's becoming more clear than ever that moving thick desktop applications into the web enviornment  is not only possible but it's coming and it's coming soon.  Ajax was a hype, but not anymore in a little shorter than a year. Let's see, what are some of the examples

  • Ajax Excel  - by Google
  • Ajax Word  - by Writely
  • Javascript Charting  - by PlotKit
  • Ajax Calendar - by Google, Trumba,Kik, 30boes, Yahoo, Spongecell...
  • hundres more......

The idea  is definitly not new. Way back in the 90s, we've seen ASP (applicaton server providers) wanted to do just that but the technologies back then just wasn't there. The hardware, the speed of the internet (I used 56k modem for 2 years!! Can you remember waiting for 30 seconds for a webpage to download?)

Well, it's time to wake up and the world is about to change. If the 90s was the renaissance era where talents and ideas were brewed, then this new decade of the millenium will be the revolutionary era: build on the fruits of our predecssors and use them for the new revolution. You missed the exciting renaissance? You are now in the revolution.

However, I do have my complains. Such far, only few organizations have been contributing to this revolution and make it truely d-y-n-a-m-i-t-e. With all the talents out there, most of them got recruited and are working to release the products for some cash! Not there is anything wrong with that (Seinfield).

The few organizations such like Prototype / Dojo / IBM are the ones who are on the fore-front of DOING this revolution. Google is another potential, though much of what they do is for themsevles, I wish they'd change their strategy a little bit and share more with others, at least of the UI world.  Having said that, open source projects don't have the same quality comparing to their peer commerical products and to move forward, we really really need more companies to join together and push this revultion together.
