Fear - The Final Road Block

Fear – The Final Road Block

When you are working in a startup mode, you truly have so much to learn. It doesn’t matter how many years of work experiences you’ve had, it doesn’t matter how many other startups you worked as an employee with, when it comes to YOURS, it becomes more personal than you would ever imagine.

In another words, the work becomes you! It defines everything about you. It reflects your creditability, ethics, your personality, your ways of management, and your psychology.

Today,  I want to talk about the most important factor, albeit might not be the most obvious one – Fear,

Fear

Fear is a factor that you go through every few month in a startup. Every time you encounter a road block, you fear and you could give up at any point.

It doesn’t mean that they can’t be resolved, but having fear getting in your way, you wouldn’t even attempt to try. In some cases, after trying, the result is not perfect, it didn’t solve the whole problem, it is not going in the direction you intended it to be, we get frustrated and we get discouraged and might I say, quite easily. Other examples,

  • Your coworker or business partner might not be living up to your expectation.
  • Your coder produces bugs when you expected it to be perfect,
  • You fear about your product quality
  • Your designers is not creating an application as pretty as you think it should be
  • Your sales is not generating the kind revenues you hoped you have
  • Sometimes it goes to a bit extreme scenarios, before you even start to sell; you fear there won’t be customers, so you stopped your development.

There are many others, these are just some examples that I personally went through. Some of them is what my business partners thought about me and some are what I thought about my business partners.

What’s common in all these situations were we felt fear. Before you make a rational approach looking into the real issue, try to talk to your business partners about the issues, find a solution to the issues?  You wanted to stop, you get discouraged and you want to give up.  Sounds impossible? I guarantee you it happens and it happens a lot.

What’s important is that you should realize it’s your fear. When problems happen you stand up and you face them. In reality, fear cause exaggeration when the reality of the problem is not as bad as you think they are, but fear prevented you from thinking logically and you give up before you even attempted to try a solution for it.

So my point is if you can overcome your fear, you’ve cleared your final road block – within yourself. When you decided to startup a career of you own, you stumble across many road blocks. My business partner Jackson and I personally went through these road blocks.
